The Sunday School Superintendent shall preside over the Sunday School Department comprised of members appointed by him/her and the Pastor. This group shall assist the Superintendent in other ways mutually agreed upon. The Sunday School Department meets at 9:30 each Sunday morning via Zoom.

Christian Education is an important component of our Sunday School ministry and serves to oversee and direct the Christian education endeavors of the Church; it involves the administration and coordination of various programs that facilitate the spiritual growth and discipleship of believers into Christ’s likeness.

Vacation Bible School The Vacation Bible School is an Auxiliary of the Sunday School Department. The ministry is led by a Director and Assistant Director who are appointed by the Superintendent with the approval of the Pastor.

A meal is served daily by the culinary staff before classes. Class time begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. with the last half hour for the children with the Minister of Music rehearsing the songs for the program on Friday evening.

Youth Dance Ministry

The Dance Ministry is an auxiliary of the Sunday School Department. The ministry enhances the spoken word through spiritual, gospel, and musical expression and movement interpretation. The movement and steps convey a message that unfolds a spiritual experience and creates a feeling that stirs the soul.

The youth dancers, led by a dance director and an assistant director, are ages 7 through 21 (with special consideration for younger participants). Dance rehearsals occur regularly as performances are planned for special occasions, church events, and community activities. Youth dancers may also perform at youth congresses and other youth-designated events. Transportation to dance rehearsal is the responsibility of the dancer or the parent and/or guardian of the dancer.

Women’s Missionary Union (WMU)

The primary purpose of the Women’s Missionary Union as members of the Church, is to share and invigorate the spirit of the Lord. The goal of WMU is to encourage others within our Church and in our community to join us in prayer, Bible study, planned worship, visitation, charitable contribution, and mentoring of women in the missionary work of Jesus Christ. We further increase our learning and understanding of God’s plan for us by engaging in assigned and directed community mission activities. One must also commit to regularly giving financially to support our Church, foreign and local missions, and the work of district, state, and National Baptist Conventions. Membership is open to women who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior.

The WMU provides morning worship services, devotion, and music on the fifth Sunday of those months having a fifth Sunday. Central District WMU conducts a fifth Sunday service with attendance at various churches within the local district association.

Youth Mission Ministry

The primary purpose of the Youth Mission Ministry is to prepare, support, encourage, and empower youth to experience the joy of a relationship with God. The Youth Mission Ministry seeks to inspire young people to learn more about Christianity and to become more involved in a spiritual lifestyle.

Youth are divided into five classes: (1) Toddlers – 4 years; (2) Kids 5 years – 11 years; (3) Juniors 12 years – 14 years; (4) Senior Boys 15 – 18 years; and (5) Senior Girls 15 years – 18 years. Boys and girls meet together as Toddlers, Kids, and Juniors. Instructional material and discussions are designed for each age group. The Youth Mission Ministry works closely with other ministries to plan and coordinate activities for the youth.

Senior Adult Ministry

The Senior Adult Ministry of Second Baptist Church was organized for the purpose of helping and encouraging senior members to become more involved in Church and community activities that enhance spiritual growth and development.

Formal meetings include lunch and invited speakers, which provide relevant information specific to their health, safety, travel, and aging. The Senior Adult Ministry visits historical sites, arts, and theatrical events of interest. The Senior Adult Ministry hosts the Soul Food Dinner each year, which is held during Black History Month in February.

Under the leadership of the Minister of Music, the Music Ministry provides music for Sunday morning worship service and provides musical programming for Second Baptist. The Music Ministry enhances the biblical-led spiritual message which stirs the soul in a variety of vocal and instrumental music expressions it is comprised of the Inspirational Choir, Men’s Chorus, Youth/Young Adult Choir, and WMU Choir.

Usher Board

The Church Usher is the first official representative of Second Baptist Church that anyone sees upon arrival for worship services and special events held at the Church. The usher has a critical role in making people feel welcome at Second Baptist and serves to assist the Pastor in placing the congregation in an open frame of mind to receive the message and all that the service offers

Ushers meet the members and visitors with a pleasant smile, and warm welcome, and direct them to a comfortable seat. They ensure entry and exit during services at the appropriate times and introduce visitors to the Church by providing a microphone for personal introductions and a visitor’s card, which is a record of their visit with our Church family.

Audio Visual Ministry

The Audio-Visual Ministry is comprised of a group of skilled volunteers within the Church membership who are committed to providing quality audio-visual operations for Church services and activities.

Audio-visual coordination consists of the technical operation of audio, live streaming, and recording equipment (including; microphones, mixer/ amplifier, video/ audio recorders, etc.) and computer-generated images and visuals that enhance congregational viewing and listening.

Community Action Ministry

The Community Action Ministry is comprised of members of Second Baptist Church, working cooperatively with other Churches in the local community, serving as an active voice for equality, respect, and fairness to all people.

Culinary Personnel

The primary responsibility of the culinary ministry is to provide food to nourish the mine, body, and soul.

Other duties include:

  • The preparation, set-up, and serving of meals for special church activities such as, anniversaries, funerals, youth activities, and other church celebrations
  • Monitoring the kitchen and food service areas to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety regulations are adhered to
  • Ensuring that business matters as they relate to ordering and purchasing supplies, are handled according to church policies and procedures and in a timely manner
  • Monitoring inventory to ensure that adequate food and kitchen supplies are available when needed
  • Fostering a team spirit with kitchen volunteers, church members, and members
